It must be hard being a dentist. They make our smiles bright, our teeth cavity-free, and gums gorgeous, and what do they get in return? A bunch of scaredy-cats who hate to go to them because of the fear of a little pain.

Coffee Chronicles - March 2006

A tourist travels to a place away from home for pleasure. A person who travels to Myrtle Beach, SC, drinks a lot of beer and plays miniature golf is a tourist. So is the person who flies to Paris, books a city tour, and snaps photos of the Eiffel Tower.

Desayuno and Dinner at Sabor Escondido

One expects to be greeted with a smiling face when entering a breakfast place, and indeed we were at Sabor Escondido. Our mesero was bearing ice water, always welcome on a sunny morning, and not so automatic at Central American restaurants. We were allowed to seat ourselves, and were pleased to note that there were many nooks and crannies where a single diner or someone who has not yet shaved or 'put on their face' can sit in relative anonymity; some even have a view.

Potholes in Paradise?

As a result of the new 'Programa Acción Verano 2006' [2006 Summer Action Program], the town of Boquete played host to over 140 workers, both men and women, from around Chiriqui province who arrived in Boquete during the week of February 6th through February 12th. Their mission: grab a shovel, load it with asphalt and start filling the many 'baches', or potholes, that have been frustrating Boqueteño drivers from the streets of Caldera to the mountain roads of Bajo Mono.
Menopause And Osteoporosis

Menopause comes from the Greek word menopausis meaning ‘month ending’. There is a decline each month in the levels of estrogen and eventually the ovaries produce almost no estrogen or progesterone. The adrenal glands continue to produce hormones called androgens, which influence general health, sexuality and muscular strength. Some of these androgen hormones are converted to estrogen in the body’s fat cells. So it is not a good idea to be too thin at this time of life. On the other hand, being overweight has its own set of problems that have been linked to increased risk of developing breast and womb cancer

Hit The Trail: Las Lagunas de Volcan

Las Lagunas de Volcan are a great place to take a walk, and with the arrival of summer the road to the lagoons is passable, even with a car. These spring fed lakes, although not large, are the highest altitude lakes in Panama. The two main lakes have abundant water year round, while the other smaller ponds are at best described as marshes in the summer. The terrain is basically level, and makes for an easy walk through the lovely primary and secondary forests. The lakes provide a moist environment year-round, a micro-climate which a wide variety of plants exploit, festooning the trees with a thriving community of ‘hitchhikers’, including many orchids, on their trunks and limbs. Numerous species of birds are found in this area, including of course many water birds. You can expect to see American Coots, Purple Gallinules, many varieties of tanagers, and parrots, to name but a few. The peacefulness of sitting by the water and watching the subtleties of nature makes for a wonderful outing.
